Waymap's SmartStep is a proprietary algorithm that uses only the motion sensors already inside a standard smartphone — no GPS, no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no mobile signal required.
By applying machine learning to analyze how a person walks — cadence, stride, direction, acceleration — Waymap's AI builds a precise, continuously updated model of where they are and where they're heading.
SmartStep learns each individual user's gait, so accuracy improves over time. This is AI-powered dead reckoning at an accuracy never achieved before, developed by world-leading mathematicians and positioning scientists.

Core Technology
VPS - Visual Positioning System
Our proprietary VPS uses the phone’s camera and deep learning to identify exactly where a user is standing at the start of their journey - to centimeter-level accuracy.
VPS requires LiDAR scanning to build a 3D visual model. Once VPS establishes starting position, SmartStep takes over for the full journey, delivering continuous, AI-corrected navigation throughout your venue.

VPS is only used with Waymap Pro. For Waymap Core, users can select their start location by selecting a nearby point of interest (POI).

Sensor Fusion
Accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and barometer data are fused using particle filtration, delivering 100x/second.

AI computes cumulative position from a known starting point using direction and distance.

Map Matching
Position is matched against your venue's digital model to confirm corridors, floors, rooms. Our map provides SmartStep with location 'truth points' correcting statistical drift continuously.

Routing Turn-by-Turn
The routing layer establishes the most efficient point from A to B, while considering user specific needs such as step-free routing. Providing instructions automatically in the user's specified style.
